The South Pacific hotels tend to be small and intimate, and often family owned and independently managed. Only in Only in Tahiti and Fiji will you find large international hotel chains (starwood, accor, intercontinental, radisson, marriott) with hotel rooms in three stoey block buildings. Thankfully you won't find any high rise hotels and even many of the large hotel chains offer individual or duplex style bungalows to fit in with the South Pacific theme.

The traditional house in the South Pacific is an open plan bungalow with walls woven from bamboo and a high thatch roof made from coconut leaves lashed together with coconut string. These bungalows are ascetic to look at and cool to sleep in, and these are replicated at many of the resorts around the South Pacific. At the budget resorts these traditional bungalows are simple huts with a bed and mosquito net whilst the luxury resort bungalows offer spacious living and are beautifully decorated. In the sheltered lagoons of Tahiti, these thatch bungalows are raised upon stilts to sit right over the lagoons. Thatch bungalows are common in Fiji (bure), Tonga and Samoa (fale), and in Tahiti (fare).

Self catering vacations in the South Pacific are most popular in the Cook Islands. In Fiji there are a few self catering motels and apartments, mostly around Nadi and Suva on the main island of Viti Levu where grocery shops are common and well stocked. Holiday homes are an excellent and affordable way to spend a holiday, particularly for large families. Holiday homes can be found in the Cook Islands, particularly on Rarotonga which is a small island and easy to get about. There are a growing number of holiday homes found in Fiji.
