The allure of a South Pacific vacation is its pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, happy-go-lucky people and a safe politicval, social and natural environment. The main threat here is the sun - too much of it. Aside from the archetypal image of sun, sand and sea, the South Pacific is excellent for adventurers with fantastic water sports (world class scuba diving, surfing and game fishing), and stunning tropical scenery with high mountains, gushing waterfalls and traditional fishing villages. The islands cater not only to romantic couples looking for a secluded escape or families on a beach holiday, but also to backpackers, eco tourists and thrill seekers.

Fiji is the most commercial destination with almost hal a million visitors a year, both backpackers and holiday makers. Tahiti has the second largest number of holiday makers, though the vast majority come from France. The Cook islands also has a well developped tourist infrastructure and receives almost 100,000 tourists a year. Samoa and Tonga are relatively undeveloped and will appeal to those looking for a more down to earth vacations.

South Pacific vacations offer reasonable value for money, although nothing as cheap as what Asia or South America offers. The cheapest destinations are Tonga and Samoa, whilst Tahiti is by far the most expensive. Unfortunately the restricted economies of scale of these tiny island nations and isolation from the world of commerce has made imports quite expensive. Stick to local foods and products and you should have a reasonably inexpensive holiday. Tipping is not encouraged in any of the islands. Credit cards are readily accepted at resorts, restaurants and shops and there are ATM machines in all major towns.

The climate in the South Pacific is tropical and warm and sunny rear-round with average day time temperatures between 25C and 32C. Slight variations occur between island nations depending on their southern latitude from the equator.

Air New Zealand is the major airline serving the South Pacific and has connecting flights between New Zealand and North America / Europe. Air Pacific offers flights between Australia and Fiji and on to other island nations. The new arrival to Pacific travel is Virgin / Pacific Blue and cheap flights between Australia and New Zealand to Fiji, Cooks, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu are readily available.
